In act 1, scene 1, Antonio says that he has no idea why he is sad, and Salario suggests that Antonio is worried about his merchant ships, which are out on the treacherous seas. Solanio initially agrees with Salario and does not blame Antonio for being concerned about his ships. However, Antonio mentions that he is not worried about his cargo because his financial situation is healthy. Solanio then suggests that Antonio is sad because he is in love, and Antonio goes on to say that love has nothing to do with his melancholy attitude. While Antonio never explicitly tells the audience why he is in a sad mood, it has been suggested that Antonio is upset because he will be losing his close friend, Bassanio, who is interested in traveling to Belmont to marry Portia. Whatever is causing Antonio's sadness remains a mystery, because Solanio and Salario have no success discovering what troubles their friend.
