Dan Cody inspired Gatsby to make it big and become fantastically wealthy. Cody himself was an incredibly rich copper magnate, leading an opulent lifestyle with all the trappings of phenomenal wealth. Gatsby worked as his assistant for a while and learned a lot from the experience. In particular, he got a real taste for the high life on board Cody's yacht. Once he'd been bitten by the wealth bug, there was no turning back. Jay wanted to be just like Cody, despite his obvious personal faults. He wanted to be wealthy; he wanted to be a success.
Meyer Wolfsheim, for good or ill, also made Gatsby. He's a notorious gangster and racketeer who helped Jay get started in the bootlegging business. If Dan Cody inspired Gatsby with the dream of getting rich, Meyer Wolfsheim showed him how to live that dream. Indeed, without Wolfsheim's assistance and connections Gatsby would never have become rich in the first place.
