Ozone is an important layer in the atmosphere. It acts as an umbrella in protecting the earth from harmful radiations like ultra violet radiations and infra red rays which leads to skin cancer.Depletion in the ozone layer is caused by the emission of CFC -chlorofluoro carbons emitted from home appliances like refigerators and air conditioners. UV rays penetrate through the ozone hole and reaches the earth's surface leading to melting of glaciers. As a result there will be change in the climatic conditions which affects the living organisms in polar ice caps.
Ozone depletion and climate change are two distinct processes whose relationship is still marked by uncertainty. However, certain facts about the two processes have been established. For instance, both climate change and ozone depletion are a result of human-induced emissions. Whereas ozone depletion is a result of the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) into the stratosphere, climate change is the result of the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
When ozone depletion takes place, a huge amount of harmful UV radiation reaches the earth. It then poses serious risks, including skin cancer. Also, additional energy is added into the earth’s system, but it is too negligible to cause an increase in temperature or change the climate.
Climate change or global warming is the result of increased greenhouse gases. They cause an increase in temperature in the atmosphere but a decrease of temperature in the stratosphere. The decreased temperature in the stratosphere creates an optimal environment for the breakdown of the ozone layer.
