In "Monologue of a Mother," repetition and alliteration are important to the poem because they emphasize the grief and alienation that the mother feels in relation to her son. Both of these devices are used through the entirety of the poem.
Some examples of repetition include:
"Strange he is, my son . . . / Strange to me like a captive in a foreign country" (lines 7–8)
"Like a strange white bird . . . / Like a bird from the far north" (lines 13–14)
"Like a cringing dog at his heels offend him now / Like a toothless hound pursuing him with my will" (lines 20–21).
Each case of repetition emphasizes how distant the mother feels from her son and how broken their relationship is.
The poem is also full of alliteration that emphasizes her heartache, such as "dead days" (line 3), "face the fire" (line 2), "bird blown" (line 13), or "blown with a broken wing" (line 14).
In "She Looks Back," some of the most significant devices are the allusion to Lot's wife and the imagery that the narrator uses. The entire poem is an allusion to the biblical story of Lot's wife, who was given a chance to escape the city of Sodom. The city was condemned by God, and Lot and his wife were allowed to escape the city as long as they did not look back. Lot's wife did look back as she ran, and therefore she was punished by being turned into a pillar of salt. The poem "She Looks Back" describes the narrator's relationship with a woman who is a mother who has left her children. Although she and the narrator try to be happy, she can't help thinking back to her children, which causes the narrator to say that the kisses they share are "a touch of bitterness on my mouth / Like salt, burning in. / And my hand withered in your hand" (lines 21–23). Like Lot's wife, this mother can't help but look back at her past life, and the poem is fully of imagery of salt burning the two of them and destroying their happiness.
