What is black power?

Black Power was an American movement for racial equality that grew out of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The symbol for Black Power is a closed black fist extended toward the sky. The name was first used by Trinidad-born Stokely Carmichael at a rally in 1966. Prominent figures of the movement were Malcolm X, who preached black supremacy and the Black Panther Party. The objective of the Black Power movement was to accelerate the pace of legal reform that would create equality between segregated Black and white citizens in the United States of America and guarantee that the rights of all citizens would be respected regardless of race. The Black Power Movement was different from its predecessor, the Civil Rights Movement, which had a religious background, with meetings being held in church halls and one of its most prominent figures being the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior. The Civil Rights Movement sought to accomplish the same goal through peaceful resistance, non-violence, and civil disobedience. Black Power was more radical, and proponents of the movement were prepared to resort to violence in order to bring about change and in response to oppression. Pluralists and nationalists were two dominant groups of the movement and were divided by belief. Pluralists believed in a peaceful coexistence of all races, while nationalists advocated a separate black nation.
