Methane is composed of four hydrogen atoms and a single carbon atom. It is a colorless, flammable, nontoxic gas. It is considered an odorless gas despite the fact that most people say it smells like rotten eggs. People most often associate methane gas with sewer gas. That is mostly correct, because sewer gas is mostly methane (which is odorless), but the methane is usually mixed with other gases, like hydrogen sulfide. That's what creates the rotten egg smell. Methane's specific gravity is .554 at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes methane lighter than air. It boils at -162.0° C and melts at -182.5° C. Commercial natural gasses are mainly composed of methane, so methane's practical uses would be anything that natural gas is used for. For example, methane can be burned to produce electricity, heat buildings, or even power various vehicles.
