During the Spanish-American War of 1898, the United States fought against Spain. Spain was attempting to crush an independence movement in Cuba and other Spanish territories such as Puerto Rico and the Philippines. By defeating Spain in the war, the US gained Cuba as a territory. The war ignited a debate about whether the US should be an imperial power.
In this document, industrialist Andrew Carnegie weighs into this debate on the anti-imperialist side. He says that Britain has more colonies than the US but that Britain does not export more than the US. Therefore, acquiring colonies is not necessarily for the benefit of the national economy. He also says that if we do not have colonies, "we are impregnable against serious attack." However, if we start attaining colonies, we will be vulnerable to attack. He also feels that the people in our dependencies, such as Filipinos, can never be truly American. Instead, he feels that the way to be more powerful abroad is to be more powerful at home.
Carnegie, like many other Americans, joined the national debate over acquiring Cuba and over imperialism in general. He felt that the US should not acquire foreign nations. You can read over this document to get a more detailed sense of his arguments.
