What was Charlie's job?

Upon embarking on her expedition, Helen acquires a dog from an Inuit polar bear hunter whom she names Charlie. In addition to extreme dangers such as snowstorms and ice cracks that the North Pole terrain presents, Helen anticipates encountering polar bears as well. For this reason, she takes Charlie along, and his main job is to protect her against potential attacks by the polar bears. Charlie proves to be very competent at his job as he succeeds at prompting Helen of impending bear attacks throughout the journey and collaborates with her to viciously scare the bears away.
Even though Charlie is acquired to provide protection, he plays an even bigger role; he becomes Helen’s companion, her pillar of hope and trust throughout the 27 days mission.

Charlie is the name of Helen Thayer's loyal husky. Three days before Helen embarks upon her epic journey to the magnetic North Pole, a hunter kindly donates Charlie to help save her from polar bear attacks. Charlie, like all Canadian Eskimo huskies, has been trained by the Inuit to warn of approaching bears. The black husky turns out to be a very useful gift for Helen as the North Pole is positively teeming with polar bears. Charlie also proves himself to be an ideal companion for Helen on her perilous expedition, not just saving her life but also her sanity as, after a long, hard struggle against the elements, she finally becomes the first woman to complete a solo journey to the magnetic North Pole.
