When Montag initially visits Faber's home and asks for assistance challenging the fireman regime, Faber refuses to help Montag because he believes the task is too dangerous and impossible. Before Montag leaves Faber's home, he takes one of the last remaining copies of the Bible and begins to tear the pages out until Faber agrees to help him. While Montag never directly calls Faber a coward, one can assume that Montag believes that Faber is a coward because he is initially not willing to undermine the fireman regime and is content staying in his home.
Once Faber agrees to help Montag, he takes him to a small room in his home, where he has been working on a two-way communication device known as the green bullet. Faber agrees to help Montag during his argument with Captain Beatty by listening to Beatty and providing Montag with responses. Later on, Faber even hides Montag from the authorities and gives him directions to meet up with the group of homeless intellectuals.
