Ethopia is confronted by a number of macroeconomic issues. One is the persistent dependence on agriculture in the country. This lack of economic diversity means that the country is highly susceptible to changes in market prices and events that disrupt production, especially weather. Drought in particular can ruin crops, which places a tremendous burden on the Ethiopian economy. Another macroeconomic concern is the lack of a trained workforce due to poverty and a poor educational system. This makes Ethiopia unattractive for higher-paying jobs and foreign investment. On the other hand, Ethiopia is rich in mineral wealth, which, along with agriculture, is a major part of its economy. Still, this wealth is mostly extracted by foreign mining companies, and the wealth from these operations tends to go out of the country. Other political issues affect the Ethiopian economy, including domestic unrest and violence, particularly along the borders with Eritrea and Somalia. This unrest also tends to limit investment in the Ethiopian economy.
