Intermediate Algebra, Chapter 4, 4.1, Section 4.1, Problem 26

Solve the system 6xy=94+7x=y by substitution. If the system is inconsistent or has dependent equations.

We solve for y in equation 2

4+7x=yGiven equationy=7x4Multiply each side by 1

Since equation 2 is solved for y, we substitute 7x4 for y in equation 1.

6x(7x4)=9Substitute y=7x46x+7x+4=9Distributive Property13x+4=9Combine like terms13x=13Subtract each side by 4x=1Divide each side by 13

We found x. Now we solve for y in equation 2.

y=7(1)4Substitute x=1y=74Multiplyy=3Subtract
