1. There are many ethical issues raised by the idea of using tools such as those described in the article to help solve mental health issues. While the tools may indeed be beneficial, as the article states, no studies have found that they really work. Moreover, the fact that "at least one" of the proposed tools is not opt-in raises questions of privacy, because Facebook and other organizations are "mining" people's sensitive health-related data without permission. Then there is the question, again raised in the article, of whether Facebook's "suicide detectors" might in fact be adding to, rather than diminishing, user distress with its automated messages.
Frank Pasquale, a medical professional, questions whether having Facebook associate you with suicidal thoughts could lead to this being forever tied to your name. Suicide is a taboo still in today's society and this could lead to people being discriminated against in employment opportunities or having their depression disclosed to their employers or families against their will.
One of the systems mentioned, Sharecare, does not tell people it is "analyzing" their relationships. Some have suggested that the things it tells people about themselves and their supposed mental state could increase user stress rather than helping to assuage it.
2. The response to this question should be yours, not mine. However, you may want to break the question down. Do you think Facebook is well-intentioned in its efforts, whether or not they are successful? Do you think the probable benefits of its algorithms are likely to outweigh the issues and risks? Or do you think Facebook is being disingenuous and is really just using these algorithms as a way to mine more data than they might otherwise be able to?
