The two rival gangs in the novel are the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers are from the impoverished section of town and typically come from dysfunctional families. Many of the Greasers have criminal records and are viewed with contempt by authority figures and wealthier citizens. They get their name from their greased, slicked-back hairstyle, and they typically wear leather jackets and blue jeans. The Socs are their rivals, who live in the wealthy section of town and hail from affluent families. They typically wear madras jackets and drive fancy cars. They enjoy throwing beer blasts and get a kick out of beating up Greasers. The Greaser gang consists of Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Johnny, Dally, Two-Bit, and Steve Randle. The Socs mentioned in the novel are Robert "Bob" Sheldon, Randy Adderson, Sherri "Cherry" Valance, and Marcia.
