In what ways do both Romeo (Romeo and Juliet) and Atticus Finch (To Kill A Mockingbird) stand up for what they believe in?

Romeo stands up for what he believes in by marrying the woman he loves despite the social pressure against his relationship. Both Romeo and Juliet's families have been feuding with each other for generations but Romeo dismisses his family's hatred for the Capulets by marrying Juliet. Romeo reveals his independence and integrity by secretly marrying Juliet regardless of the consequences of their relationship or the opinions of others; he does not allow his family's negative perception of the Capulets to stop him from marrying Juliet.
Similarly, Atticus makes the unpopular decision to defend a black man in front of the racist citizens of Maycomb, Alabama. Despite the negative opinions regarding his decision to defend Tom Robinson, Atticus does the right thing and demonstrates his integrity by valiantly defending Tom in front of a prejudiced jury. Overall, both Romeo and Atticus show integrity, honor, and independence by making unpopular decisions that challenge their society's conventions, perceptions, and beliefs.
