What is the gist of Lyddie?

By "gist" I think that the question is asking about what the main message of the story is.  Lyddie tells the story of a young farm girl that moves from her farm to eventually become a factory girl in the textile mills.  The story shows her struggles in the mills and does a nice job of highlighting some of the poor working conditions that existed at that time for these young women. Lyddie works her way up to be one of her factory's top producers, but then she gets fired.  She debates about whether or not to return home and get married, but she has learned the value of learning and independence.  She decides to go to college instead.  I would say that the gist of this book is that it highlights the value of perseverance, hard work, and education.  Lyddie impresses just about everybody she comes across because of her work ethic and tenacity.  During the course of the story, Lyddie is met with success because of her work ethic; however, for every success that she has, there are setbacks that she must struggle to overcome.  Lyddie consistently does this with her "never-quit" attitude.
