What, if any, are some of the benefits of artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is a term normally used to refer to machines programmed with two capabilities: deep learning and some degree of autonomous decision-making within limited parameters. This type of software is used for many significant applications. While some of the most dramatic, such as playing games such as chess and Go, are more entertaining than beneficial, other applications of this sort of software technology are revolutionizing a wide variety of fields.
Industrial robots are increasingly being designed to perform physically difficult and dangerous jobs in manufacturing. Although over the short term, this can create technological unemployment, over the long term, it will reduce industrial accidents and free workers to perform jobs requiring more creativity and intelligence. Military uses of AI can reduce the danger to soldiers and lead to more accurate targeting, perhaps reducing civilian casualties. Robots and AI have many applications in industrial safety and emergency response, as they can be sent into sites which might have radioactive or chemical contamination without risking human lives.
Facial recognition software uses AI and can have the positive benefit of preventing fraud and preventing crime. On the negative side, it can be used repressively by authoritarian governments. Other AI-based pattern recognition software offers potential for more accurate reading of medical x-rays, including mammograms.
