Why does Ruth give Mama a hopeless look for her grandmotherly enthusiasm for a new child?

Ruth is the one character who does not live in a dream world, thus, while Mama is excited about a new child in the family, Ruth understands all the consequences of bringing another child into this family. For instance, Travis already sleeps on the couch in the family's cramped apartment, so where will the new child sleep when he or she gets a little older? What will the family do without Ruth's income when she has the baby? How will they literally feed another mouth? And if you have the version of the play in which Travis witnesses the beating of a rat in the apartment building, from Ruth's expression as she hears the story and finally puts her hand across Travis's mouth to stop him from speaking we see that she also realizes the poor environment in which she is already raising one child. She does not want to bring another one into it. It is all of this reality that Ruth struggles against in her decision to have an abortion; reality wins over any dreams Ruth might allow herself to have about a baby.
