In chapter 4, Ponyboy and Johnny arrive at Buck Merrill's place to consult with Dally on what they should do next. Dally gives Pony and Johnny clothes, money, and a gun before explaining to them their plan of escape. Dally then instructs the boys to hop on a freight train and travel to Windrixville. When they arrive at Windrixville, Johnny and Pony will need to hide out in an abandoned church on the top of Jay Mountain. Dally also tells the boys to stop at a store and buy a week's supply of food when they get there. Pony and Johnny follow through with Dally's escape plan and they successfully flee their hometown without getting arrested by the police. When they arrive at Windrixville, they ask for directions to Jay Mountain and end up hiding out in the abandoned church. During their time together, Pony and Johnny develop a lasting friendship as they read Gone with the Wind and contemplate their futures.
