Emo grows increasingly disturbed by his experiences of war. He's becoming a danger to himself and to those around him. His life consists of little more than sitting around getting drunk and reliving memories of his army service. His anger, his alcoholism, and his violent temper are a toxic mix. Emo is a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Although Emo hates Tayo for being part white, he's actually in the grip of self-loathing over his own cultural identity; he effectively turns his back on his heritage by sharing the same desires as white people outside the pueblo. Due to widespread racial prejudice, however, he's unable to fulfill those desires, and this merely adds to his rage, frustration, and lack of self-respect.
Emo's drink-fueled deterioration and lust for violence are making him ever more erratic. It's no surprise then that the suspicious deaths of three other veterans are attributed to him. Emo is such a danger to the community that the elders have no choice but to expel him. He doesn't face any legal consequences for his actions, but banishment is nonetheless regarded as the ultimate punishment in the Laguna Pueblo.
