Does Anne become a friend of Gilbert Blythe?

When Anne first arrives at school, she and Gilbert are not friendly toward each other because Gilbert, being attracted to Anne, tries to get her attention in any way he can, including by calling her "carrots", a decision that he later regrets, since Anne is sensitive about her red hair and does not forgive him easily because it hurts her pride. Over time, however, Gilbert redeems himself and proves to Anne that he is worthy of her time. Anne and Gilbert are very competitive in school and are always looking for ways to be better than each other in a friendly way. As time goes on, Gilbert further illustrates his care for Anne by giving up his teaching position close to home so that Anne can still live with Marilla and teach.
Eventually, Anne realizes that Gilbert is more than a friend to her, particularly when he gets very sick. After refusing his marriage proposal the first time, she accepts him and they get married.

At the beginning of the Anne of Green Gables series, Anne Shirley is not particularly fond of Gilbert Blythe, who teases her at school and, on one occasion, dips the ends of her pigtails into her inkwell, so that when she moves, the whole of her dress becomes spattered with ink. Initially, in response to this behavior, Anne is opposed to Gilbert and does not want to associate with him.
Soon, however, it becomes clear that Gilbert's behavior towards Anne has been motivated by feelings of attraction. By the time Anne and Gilbert are in their teens, Gilbert is more than a friend to Anne. Ultimately, after she has gone away to college and receives an education, Anne returns to Prince Edward Island and marries Gilbert, with whom she then has many children. So Anne not only becomes a friend of Gilbert Blythe's, but becomes his wife.
