When Gwen initially sees Max walking out of his home, she freaks out and grabs Kevin. With a frightened expression on her face, Gwen places Kevin in the wagon and runs away. Max immediately recognizes that Gwen is afraid of him. In chapter 5, Gram gets a call from Gwen, who apologizes for the way she acted when she first saw Max. Gwen initially thought that Max was his father, Killer Kane, which is why she was frightened. Max then visits Kevin's home, and Gwen apologizes to him for her behavior. She then explains to Max that she used to be close friends with his mother and recalls how he used to be friends with Kevin in daycare. Before they eat dinner together, Max picks up a knife to hand to Gwen, and she doesn't flinch. Gwen's reaction indicates that she does not fear Max anymore, and he forgives her for initially being scared of him.
