Emerson says that for those who cry foolishly, we should offer them the "rough electric shocks" of truth and health. If people are discontent, he says, it is because they lack the will to take hold of their own lives and destinies. Therefore, instead of sympathy, we should offer them a form of tough love that helps them to get a grip on themselves, stop whining, and get on with the business of living.
We all need to grasp hold of our own fate, Emerson says, and pursue that valiantly, regardless of what others think or say. A person who owns whom he really is in his deepest soul and leans into that destiny fearlessly is no longer needy or begging for sympathy. At that point, the person becomes loved because he no longer needs the love and approval of others.

Emerson says we should do what instead of sitting down to "cry for company" with others?
