The basic political structure of California was established in the Constitution of the State of California, which specifies the nature and structure of the branches of the government of California. It was ratified in 1879 and has since been substantially amended via ballot propositions and voter initiatives.
Like the federal government, the state government is divided into three branches, an executive, legislative, and judicial branch. The California State Legislature is bicameral, comprised of the Assembly and the Senate, and is tasked with making laws. The judicial branch consists of the Supreme Court of California and lower courts, and it interprets the law in specific cases. The executive branch, headed by the Governor, is responsible for implementing laws and appointing heads of various state agencies. There are also municipal and county governments responsible for their specific localities.
