In Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, characters Louise Banks and Colonel Weber bring up the idea that, when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. This is an intriguing idea that basically means that, whatever your background, training, or experiences happen to be, they shape how you see solutions. When presented with a problem and you are in the military, you see a military solution. If you are a politician, then you see a political solution. On one hand, Banks is concerned by this idea, because, if the aliens are introduced to humans in a specific way, it will form the basis for all their interactions. On the other hand, this idea is reflected in how the different groups want to deal with the aliens.
