What is the perceived role of IT manager in an organization?

An Information Technology (IT) manager has a wide range of responsibilities within an organization, all related to the central task of designing, maintaining, and managing the organization's Information Technology infrastructure. The actual responsibilities of IT managers can vary depending on the specific nature of their company and job description. At the highest level, IT people with responsibility for information as a strategic resource can act as Chief Information Officers (CIOs) whose remit includes long-term planning and strategy; this tends to occur in companies where IT is viewed not just as an enabling technology but as itself part of the core business. At the other end of the spectrum are companies where the IT manager has a role limited to technical support.
An IT manager is responsible for supervising other people. These people may be tasked with training others on using technology, installing and maintaining hardware and software, or developing new software and standards for internal use. Another important component of IT under the purview of the IT manager is information security, including scenarios that deal with disaster response and data recovery. IT managers are also responsible for creating standards including what devices and software can be used on a corporate network. They will also be tasked with handling updates to software and hardware including all aspects of the migration process to new technology.
The IT manager also is responsible for hiring and training IT staff and interfacing with various stakeholders internally. An IT manager may also be tasked with spearheading ways in which IT systems can interact with external customer or supplier hardware and software. Essentially, the IT manager is responsible for supervising people who implement all aspects of information technology design, specification, standards, installation, training, and maintenance in response to the needs of the entire company.
