When it comes to “changing the world”, we must start by changing people’s thinking. A new mindset will eventually lead to changes in behavior. By changing the way people view both The Myths of Progress on the Tech Frontier and The Myth of the Melting Pot specifically, our society will change. What do you think is wrong with these myths as they exist today? How will the world look when your changes are implemented? You need to change thinking, definitions, norms, etc. to make these changes happen, for both myths. You have to be as specific as possible.

The Myth of the Melting Pot is that when people from different backgrounds or countries arrive or live in the United States, their differences dissolve into the larger American society. However, the truth is that the norms of different cultures persist, and many people have likened the American society to a salad, in which people retain some of their essential differences, rather than to a melting pot.
In order to change this myth, we as a society have to change our norms about what is "American." The definition of American can no longer be synonymous with the stereotypical American—white, Christian, heterosexual, middle class, in a traditional family structure, etc. Instead, starting at a young age, children have to learn that Americans are not defined by homogeneity, or sameness, but by their differences. As people learn to accept people who are different with regard to race, religion, belief systems, sexuality, sexual identities, family composition, etc., the norms about what or who is American will change. The media has begun to feature shows, even on network television and in film, about people who are not "traditional." The TV show Will and Grace, for example, features an openly gay character, as have many other TV shows and films.
The Myth of Progress, which affects areas such as the economy and the tech frontier, is the belief that progress will proceed forever without any limits. The Myth of Progress in the Tech Frontier is that technology will continue to improve and that its improvement is limitless. In addition, the myth is that more technology is better for our society and our world. This myth is problematic, however, because there is a point at which the tech frontier is limited by knowledge and potential. In addition, the unlimited progress of technology could result in the dehumanization of our world and in environmental damage.
In order for this myth to change, norms have to change around the definition of "progress." It does not only refer to better economic outcomes but also to better health outcomes. Environmental watchdog groups, for example, need to expose the damage that technology does to our environment. Technology often results in increased environmental degradation and waste. In addition, technology does not always better society; in many ways, rather than make our lives easier, technology places burdens on us (for example, our need to always respond to e-mails and texts). Technology does not always result in progress if we define progress as the preservation of our environment and the protection of our mental health and leisure time. Norms have to change in our culture about our priorities and the need for time away from technology to keep us sane and healthy. If this myth changes, our world will develop a more balanced interaction with the environment and will protect more personal time away from technology.
