Islam originated in India due to trade between India and the Arabic-speaking world. Arab traders who practiced the religion of Islam arrived on the western coast of India around 600 AD. Throughout the 7th century, Muslim traders and missionaries settled communities in the southwest region of India. The most populous and vibrant early Islamic communities were settled in the southwestern coastal state of Kerala. Between the 7th and 12th centuries, Islam spread throughout India, and became popular in the northern coastal areas as well. By the 12th century, Islam had a strong presence throughout northern India, particularly in the northern state of Gujarat. Though the influence of Islam diminished through the 13th and 14th centuries, the religion continues to be widely practiced. There remain many strong and vibrant Islamic communities within the state of India today.
