Read the below article and answer the following https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/05/technology/silicon-valley-brotopia-emily-chang.html Were you shocked or surprised by anything in the article? [Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! Casablanca, 1942] Based upon your own on-the-job and life experiences, what major factors foster and contribute to negative (and positive) attitudes toward women and other minorities in the workplace and industry where you work? Has the #METOO Movement become an informal (or formal) point of discussion where you work?

This article, which includes an interview with Brotopia author Emily Chang, exposes the sexist situation in Silicon Valley, which may not be shocking to many people. According to Chang, a test devised by psychologists in the late 1960s and early 1970s screened computer programmers for traits such as antisocial attitudes. The result was that far more men than women were hired, and this in part has bred an industry in which women are not only not hired at the same rates as men, they are also routinely subjected to sexual harassment and are sometimes forced to attend what Chang describes as "sex parties." It is not entirely shocking that an industry dominated by men has unequal workplace practices, but it is clearly time for the industry to amend its ways.
You can think about how women and people of color are treated in your workplace. In many workplaces, the power structure—those who make hiring and promotion decisions—is dominated by white men. They tend to favor their own kind in hiring and promotion, meaning that it is harder for women and people of color to get ahead. In addition, many men tend to listen more attentively to ideas that come from men, not women. The chart by the EEOC (see the link below) shows risk factors for harassment, which includes a history of not having a diverse workplace and the existence of banter or talk that is degrading to women or minorities. As a result of this type of harassment, which is common at many workplaces, the #METOO Movement has become a major topic of conversation.
