Croesus reigned over Lydia for 14 years until he was defeated by Cyrus the Great of Persia in 546 BC. Croesus was uncomfortable with the increasing power of the Persians in Anatolia. He viewed them and their king as an immediate threat that required attention. As he prepared to launch his campaign against the Persians, the Delphic oracle warned that the attack would end a great empire but did not specify the empire that would fall. The oracle also asked Croesus to develop his alliances, and after he did as advised, he launched his campaign. His attack ended inconclusively in Anatolia, and he was forced to disband his armies for winter. However, Cyrus did not disband his armies and instead pursued Croesus to Sardis, capturing both the city and Croesus. Different accounts exist as to what happened to Croesus after the capture. Some state that he was killed by Cyrus, while others suggest he was saved by the gods and appointed as Cyrus’s advisor.
