In order to enter medical school, Paul had to spend a year taking the relevant premedical coursework. Many of his classes during this time consisted of required physics and chemistry courses.
Once these classes were over, however, Paul found himself with free time. Since medical school applications usually took eighteen months, Paul signed up to pursue a degree in the history and philosophy of science and medicine.
His studies allowed him to explore the connection between the physiological and the spiritual, leading him to conclude that valid moral perspectives could only be obtained through direct experience with matters of life and death. After years of being ambivalent about the medical field, Paul came to realize the profound opportunity medicine would afford him.
Through direct experience, he would finally be able to craft a relevant biological philosophy, one that approached the physiological and the spiritual in a rational way.
