Rose does not run away after her beating. However, after each beating from her father, she thinks about ways of punishing her parents. She thinks about “dying, committing suicide, or even running away.” She thinks about “never talking to them, never forgiving them” for the beatings. Often after such occasions, her stepmother, Flo, reaches out to her by bringing into her room a “jar of cream” to rub over her bruises. She also brings in a tray of “chocolate milk, little tasty sandwiches, canned salmon, mayonnaise, butter tarts, and chocolate biscuits.” All these nice things help to pacify Rose.
Rose is a naughty girl. She gets the first beating from her father when she teaches her baby brother a dirty rhyme she has learned at school. The rhyme goes “Two Vancouvers fried in snot! Two pickled arseholes tied in a knot!” On this particular day, Rose is also defiant towards her stepmother and talks back to her when she tries to reprimand her about her “smart aleck behavior, rudeness, sloppiness, and conceit.” Unable to reason with her, Flo is forced to call upon her father to iron out the issue. Her father resolves the conflict between the two by giving Rose a real good hiding.
Afterward, each time Rose and Flo fight, Rose’s father is called upon to resolve the conflict through the “royal beatings.”
