A seed is the result of fertilization in plants due to the process of sexual reproduction. Once a flower is pollinated, the pollen germinates downward in the flower to the ovary where ovules are located. Within the pollen tube are two sperm cells. One sperm fertilizes an egg to produce a zygote. Another sperm fertilizes two polar cells to form a triploid food supply. Therefore, a seed contains an embryo plant and its early food supply. In order for it to successfully germinate, it must have moisture and a place to grow. The advantage of seed dispersal by wind is that the offspring can be transported a distance from the parent plant which will decrease competition between them. Lightweight seeds that have adaptations for wind transport include winged seed pods like in a maple tree or lightweight seeds that float on the breeze as seen in dandelions.
