The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg was absolutely essential to the spread of the Renaissance and its ideas. At the intellectual heart of the Renaissance was humanism, which in this specific context relates to the rediscovery of ancient European learning, the wisdom of Greece and Rome. For centuries, works of antiquity had lain in obscure libraries, often in remote monasteries, gathering dust. As such, they were inaccessible to most people and so could not be read, studied, or discussed. The invention of the printing press changed all that. Now, for the first time, some of the greatest fruits of ancient European learning could be made available to a much wider audience, allowing the wisdom of the past to be disseminated throughout Europe.
