How does Stanley almost get into a fight?

In chapter 30, Zigzag and the other boys begin picking on Stanley because Zero has been digging his holes in exchange for reading lessons. On Zigzag's birthday, he becomes increasingly hard on Stanley and sarcastically asks Stanley if he is also allowed to dig his hole. When Stanley attempts to ignore Zigzag, he continues to pick on him. Zigzag even offers Stanley his spot in the canteen line and asks if Stanley will take his cookie. When Stanley politely asks Zigzag to take the cookie out of his face, Zigzag continues to hold it inches from Stanley's nose. Stanley finally shoves Zigzag's hand away and Zigzag begins pushing him back. Mr. Pendanski watches as Zigzag proceeds to bully Stanley and even encourages Stanley to defend himself. Stanley then makes a feeble attempt to punch Zigzag, who pounces on him and begins hitting him violently. Zero immediately intervenes to defend Stanley by jumping on Zigzag's back and beginning to choke him before the counselors break up the fight.

Stanley almost gets into a fight with Zigzag after Zigzag shoves him and he tries to retaliate. Mr. Pendanski sees Zigzag shoving Stanley and tells Stanley to hit back. Stanley tries to fight back, but Zigzag ends up on top of him. Zero jumps on Zigzag’s back, forcing Mr. Pendanski to fire in the air to separate them. The shot attracts the warden and other counsellors.
The other boys try to make light of the incident, but Zigzag tells on Stanley, stating that Zero has been digging part of Stanley’s holes. Stanley is informed that the practice is not allowed, and he defends himself, stating that he is teaching Zero to read and write. The Warden asks the boys to stop the teaching lesson. Stanley insists that he can give Zero the lessons and still dig his own holes, but his plea is rejected.
