How old is Herman E. Calloway?

Herman E. Calloway's exact age is never revealed in the story. However, Curtis does write that Herman is an ornery old man, who hasn't seen his daughter in eleven years and turns out to be Bud's grandfather. Herman is a well-known musician who resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Herman Calloway's daughter is Angela Janet Caldwell, who passed away at the age of twenty-six, when Bud was only six years old. For the past four years, Bud has spent the majority of his life in and out of numerous foster homes and orphanages before he decides to travel from Flint to Grand Rapids with the hopes of meeting his father. From the posters his mother left behind, Bud is under the impression that Herman E. Calloway is his biological father. When Bud initially meets Herman, he is surprised to discover that Herman is much older than he expected and is discouraged to learn that Herman is a relatively mean person. Later on, it is revealed that Herman E. Calloway is Bud's grandfather and Herman is devastated to learn that his daughter had passed away at the age of twenty-six.
