What did the United States look like in its first census? From that census information, what words could be used to describe the United States demographically? Please use 4-6 sentences.

The first United States Census was carried out in 1790. It had been authorized by Congress in the appropriately named Census Act of 1790. The Act allowed marshals to visit every household in the country to determine the total population of the United States. The final tally came to just under 4 million people.
The population could reasonably be described as diverse, as there were nearly 750,000 people in the country who were either slaves or non-white. Appropriately enough for a young country, the United States population was itself remarkably young. One of the categories used by marshals in collecting the relevant data was "Free white males of 16 years and older." This was a way for the Census to gauge the country's potential military strength, especially important given the continued foreign threats to American sovereignty.
