In chapter 6, Jem and Dill decide to sneak into the Radley yard and peak through the windows in hopes of catching a glimpse of their reclusive, enigmatic neighbor. Scout tags along as Jem sneaks out of the house and meets up with Dill before walking over to the Radley place. After the boys tell Scout their plans, she asks why they decided to sneak into the Radley yard at night to peak through the windows. Jem responds by giving Scout numerous reasons as to why they chose to raid the Radley home at night. Jem tells Scout that the night would provide the necessary coverage so that nobody would see them enter the yard, Atticus wouldn't hear them because he'd be too busy reading, if Boo happened to kill them they'd miss school and not vacation, and it would be easier to see inside Boo's home during the night. The three children then proceed to sneak into the Radley yard but fail to get a good look at Boo through the window before Nathan Radley steps outside with a shotgun, which forces them to flee the yard and run for their lives.
