Why does Alice decide to start a diet?

Alice begins dieting after Roger breaks up with her. She is upset about the end of their relationship and blames the failure of their relationship on the fact that Roger is not attracted to her. She believes that if she loses weight, she will become desirable to him again and he'll regret ending things.
Alice hopes that losing weight will change the way other people see her. Ultimately, it changes the way she sees herself. She becomes more self-confident, and with every pound she loses, she yearns to lose more. She becomes addicted to the feelings that come along with her improved body image and the compliments she receives. In this way, her weight loss is terrible for her mental health, spiraling her out of control.

First and foremost, she's devastated over her rejection by Roger. Alice has some major self-esteem issues and being dumped certainly didn't help. Her increasing insecurity and depression are contributing to her weight gain. Alice thinks that if she starts to lose weight then maybe she'll feel good about herself. Maybe Roger will see the error of his ways and want her back.
Alice's father has accepted a new teaching position at a different college meaning that the whole family will have to move. Alice is excited by the prospect of a change of scenery; she sees it as a chance to remake herself. Primarily, this means sticking rigidly to her dieting goals. As Alice develops more self-confidence however, weight loss starts to become an unhealthy obsession. It becomes so intense that she seriously contemplates making herself sick to maintain her weight.
