College Algebra, Chapter 4, 4.1, Section 4.1, Problem 16

A quadratic function f(x)=x24x+4.

a.) Find the quadratic function in standard form.

f(x)=x24x+4f(x)=1(x2+4x)+4Factor out 1 from x-termsf(x)=1(x2+4x+4)+4(1)(4)Complete the square: add 4 inside parentheses, subtract (1)(4) outsidef(x)=(x+2)2+8Factor and simplify

The standard form is f(x)=(x+2)2+8.

b.) Find its vertex and its x and y-intercepts.

By using f(x)=a(xh)2+k with vertex at (h,k).

The vertex of the function f(x)=(x+2)2+8 is at (2,8).

Solving for x-interceptSolving for y-interceptWe set f(x)=0, thenWe set x=0, then0=(x+2)2+8Add (x+2)2y=(0+2)2+8Substitute x=0(x+2)2=8Take the square rooty=4+8Simplifyx+2=±8Subtract 2y=4x=±82

c.) Draw its graph.
