In The Golden Key, Tangle is one of two main characters. When she is first introduced in the story, we learn that she is a young girl whose father left her in the care of servants after her mother's death. These servants did not take good care of Tangle or the house they lived in, which was near the border of the forest.
After establishing all of this, the narrator of the story then tells us that the fairies who lived in this forest hated untidiness and "slovenly people," because "they want the whole earth nice and clean." After trying and failing to harass the maids enough to get them to leave, the fairies made a plan to drive Tangle out of the house, thinking that "if they got rid of her the maids would be sure to be turned away."
And so, one night when the servants left Tangle alone in the house, the fairies crept in and began to play a series of tricks on Tangle, hoping to scare her away. They saw that she had been reading the story Silverhair (Silverhair; meant to conjure the image of Goldilocks), and made Tangle believe that, like in the story, bears were coming into the house. This scared Tangle terribly, and she ran off into the forest.
