It's hard to say if Darwin's method of evolutionary change is the correct method. It is currently the most popular and accepted method, but it might not always be. As scientists discover more evidence, theories are changed or dropped completely. It is possible that Darwin is totally wrong, and humans just haven't discovered the correct method by which evolution happens. I'd like to make it clear that Darwin didn't invent/discover evolution. The idea that species change over time was around before Darwin. What Darwin contributed to evolutionary theory was a very workable method by which species could change over a period of time. Darwin said that within any species, there is going to be random differences between individuals. Those slightly different traits will make an organism better or worse adapted to a particular environment. Better adaptations increase an organisms "fitness." Fit organisms tend to survive, and that's why Darwin called it "Survival of the Fittest." A fit, surviving organism is more likely to reproduce and pass on that particular adaptation. After enough time has passed, the entire population of that species will have the adaptation. The species is now different than it was before. Nature essentially selected which traits were better than others, and those became the norm for the species. That's why it's called "Natural Selection." Nature selects which organisms will be the fittest and will thus survive and pass on their unique adaptation.
