How would you analyze the following quote from Miss Julie: "I'm falling, I'm falling! John. Fall down to my level and then I'll lift you up again afterward. Julie. What awful power dragged me down to you, the power which draws the weak to the strong?—which draws him who falls to him who rises"?

Julie, the daughter of a Count, has fallen for a social inferior, a valet by the name of Jean. Their relationship is a tempestuous one, to say the least, punctuated by violent arguments and threats of suicide. Throughout the play, Julie finds herself caught between the sense of social superiority she enjoys as an aristocrat's daughter and her passionate desire for Jean. Already unbalanced, Julie's mind is further disturbed by her inability to reconcile the two competing sides of her personality.
The reference to falling in the quoted excerpt is significant for a number of reasons. Through her illicit affair with Jean, Julie has become what society at that time would've regarded as a fallen woman. Unmarried women were supposed to be chaste and pure; sex before marriage was considered morally unacceptable. Julie is doubly damned in society's eyes for committing such a transgressive act with a member of the lower-classes, one of her father's servants. By sleeping with a mere valet, Julie has fallen from her exalted state as one of society's elite.
Yet Julie's falling, in both moral and social terms, is an expression of a deep psychological desire. She has a recurring dream in which she climbs on top of a tall pillar. She doesn't know how she got there, but there she sits, wanting to jump but lacking the courage to do so. This is a metaphor which is expressed by Julie's behavior in her relationship with Jean. She wants to escape from her privileged position in life, to ruin herself in the eyes of her class, and an affair with a social inferior is the ideal way for her to do that.
In her unhinged outburst, Julie wonders aloud what it was that drew her to Jean; was it love, or perhaps the natural gravitation of the weak towards the strong? In her falling, Julie represents the decadence and decline of the old aristocracy in late nineteenth-century Europe. In this Darwinist age, they have shown themselves decidedly unfit, unable to compete with the lower orders in the developing life-and-death struggle between the classes that will culminate in a more democratic age.
