What was life like for slaves on small plantations?

Slaves on a small plantation were responsible for working the fields and harvesting the crops. They usually worked six days a week, often from sunrise to sunset, and they had their own quarters in which they lived. They often had the minimum amount of necessities, such as food, clothing, and water needed to survive.
Religion was important to the slaves as it provided a spiritual release for them. Usually, the small plantation owner himself supervised the slaves, and he might even have worked with them. Sometimes, these small plantation owners got to know the slaves very well. Therefore, slaves on a small plantation often, but not always, had easier lives than slaves who worked on a large plantation who were watched by an overseer.
It should be noted that the slaves were still always viewed as property and didn’t have any rights, on small plantations as well. Even if they were treated well, they were regarded as severely unequal to the white people who lived around them.
