How confident is John Thornton about Buck's ability to perform the feat?

In chapter 6, a man named Matthewson bets John Thornton that Buck cannot drag a thousand-pound sled a hundred yards in the snow. John Thornton does not have the money to bet Matthewson but asks Jim O’Brien to lend him the money. London writes that John Thornton is not particularly confident that Buck will be able to drag the thousand-pound sled for a hundred yards. John is said to be "heavy with doubt" and is worried that Buck cannot drag the extremely heavy sled. Thornton had been hurried into the wager and had no time to process his thoughts thoroughly. Despite witnessing Buck's strength firsthand, Thornton doubts that his dog will win him the bet. However, Buck exceeds everyone's expectations by pulling the thousand-pound sled for a hundred yards.
