Nick is breaking things off with Marjorie; it just isn't fun anymore. His complaint forms the basis of the most important part of his conversation with Bill in "The Three-Day Blow." It's not really surprising news when one considers that Nick actually uses the exact same expression in the story's prequel, "The End of Something." There, Nick had gone on a fishing trip with Marjorie during which he expressed his dissatisfaction with their relationship. As so often happens with Hemingway, the male protagonist feels his uber-masculinity threatened by a woman with ideas. Marjorie is, at the very least, Nick's intellectual equal, and this makes him feel uncomfortable.
Nick's boozy conversation with Bill allows him to sink right back into a more comfortable, less threatening world—a world where men are men and where they still enjoy the freedom to indulge in brief, meaningless relationships with women.

What is not fun anymore for Nick in the story "The Three-Day Blow"?
