Electrolytes are important to your body. They are minerals that carry an electric charge, and they are important because they help maintain fluid levels in the body as well as the pH of the body. Sodium, potassium, chlorine, magnesium, calcium, and phosphate are all electrolytes. The cardiovascular system is very broadly composed of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. In regards to the cardiovascular system, electrolytes help create and carry the electrical impulses that are in the heart. An electrolyte imbalance could severely impact the heart by causing it to beat irregularly, too fast, or too slow. This is called arrhythmia. An electrolyte imbalance isn't the only cause of arrhythmia, so a doctor wouldn't automatically conclude that the heart problems are linked to an electrolyte imbalance, but it is a good place to start.
