The Black Echo is a crime/police novel, and the first in Michael Connelly's series about the detective and Vietnam War veteran Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch. In this book, we follow Bosch as he uncovers connections between the murder of Billy Meadows, underground tunnels, and unsolved robberies.
Yes, Harry Bosch does get shot in this book. When he was fighting in the Vietnam war, Bosch was a "tunnel rat," infiltrating the underground tunnels used by the Vietcong. During this investigation, Bosch and FBI agent Eleanor Wish discover that the underground sewer tunnels of Los Angeles are being utilized for diamond robberies, that agent John Rourke is in on the scheme, and that several murders are connected to it. In an attempt to apprehend Rourke, Bosch goes down into the tunnels, facing his trauma from his time in the tunnels in Vietnam. Bosch is shot in the shoulder by Rourke, and he is saved by Wish, who shoots and kills Rourke.
