What best explains pattern in design?

A pattern occurs when a group of elements is repeated in a predictable sequence. For example, a combination of four squares two inches long by two inches, equally spaced at two inches apart along the horizontal plane, would constitute a pattern. If the elements of a pattern were to be arranged in a different sequence or if some elements were missing, the lack of consistency would disqualify it from conforming to the pattern. Some examples of patterns are spirals and lattices.
The elements of a pattern are subject to rhythm, which may be random, regular, alternating, flowing, or progressive. Elements in patterns subject to random rhythm are sporadic in combination and placement. Regular rhythm has measured intervals, and alternating rhythm uses elements that break sequence and start again. Elements bend or curve if subject to a flowing rhythm. And progressive rhythm features changes, either subtle or dramatic, to the elements when repeated.
