Eastern religions are identified as the religious practices originating in Asia, such as Buddhism and Hinduism. In the last several years, many Christian faiths have faced scandal. Many Catholic priests have been accused of sexual misconduct, while other organizations have been accused of misuse of financial funds. Eastern religious practices have become more popular and common place, as individuals have moved away from organized religious practices and have searched for faith that is based in personal autonomy. Increased migration of Asians to different countries has also created a more global awareness around their culture and religious practices.
Most Eastern religious practices are about looking inward and can be practiced alone without attending a weekly gathering at a specific time, fitting more into the modern busy lifestyle. Mindfulness and meditation are also strong components of these practices. Recent research has linked these activities to positive physical outcomes, thus also increasing their popularity.
As our world has become more globalized, more and more individuals are being exposed to new ideologies and ways of thinking -- which includes Eastern religions and philosophies. Eastern religious literature, in contrast to much of the hellfire, brimstone, inherent guilt, and historical atrocities committed by Judeo-Christian religions has led many to look into alternative religions, leading to an increase in Eastern religious text sales -- both from casual readers and those prescribed on academic reading lists.
One single case and point that illustrating this is the 1960s American influx of Eastern religious texts and thought, transcendental meditation, and the appeal of the guru to a distraught and disenfranchised generation. Eastern religious texts tend to have their readers and believers dealing with what is, dealing with a world that is on fire and burning, which many are finding more appealing in modern times as a way to make sense of an increasingly complicated world.
