What is law?

Law is a set of rules and regulations made by governments to help societies operate in an orderly fashion. Laws can be traced back to ancient times: the Code of Hammurabi being one set of well-known laws. Without laws, people would be able to do whatever they wanted to do, which could lead to a chaotic, disorderly society.
In representative democracies, such as in the government of the United States, a law goes through a fairly detailed process before it goes into effect. The legislative branch must pass a law and then, under normal circumstances, it needs to be signed by the President.
Laws regulate many aspects of life, including how fast we drive, the minimum drinking age, and procedures regarding marriage and divorce. There are also many categories of law, including contract law, property law, constitutional law, and international law.
